Standard Area- one of the above (subject area or subject area grouping)
Content Standard- narrative description of expected knowledge and abilities that describe what students should know and be able to do (usually in a domain or particular subject area).
Learning Standard- an established level or degree of quantity, value or quality. The NYS Learning Standards are defined as the knowledge, skills, and understandings that individuals can and do habitually demonstrate over time as a consequence of instruction and experience.
Key Idea- major domains (skills, knowledge or ideas) that define fields of study or areas of learning. The NYSED key ideas define their respective learning standards in specific content areas (e.g., dance, music, theatre, visual arts) or fundamental skills (e.g., reading, writing, listening, speaking).
Performance Indicator- a description of student achievement expectations on the developmental levels of elementary (grades K-4), intermediate (grades 5-8) and commencement (grades 9-12). LOTE does not use grade levels related to performance indicators but rather proficiency levels (see below).
Level- a position on any scale of achievement. Specific levels used in the NYSED Learning Standards are: elementary (grades K-4), intermediate (grades 5-8), commencement (grades 9-12) (general education and major sequence in arts); checkpoint A, B and C (in LOTE); and core, specialized and experiential (in CDOS). On State elementary and intermediate tests, four performance levels are identified: (1) serious academic deficiencies; (2) basic proficiency; (3) proficiency;
and (4) exceeds the standards.
Checkpoint- a defined level of achievement in the Learning Standards for Languages Other Than English.
Sample Tasks- an example of student work that suggests evidence of appropriate progress towards a standard at a given level.
Assessment- any systematic method of obtaining information from tests and other sources, used to draw inferences about characteristics of people, objects or programs.
Resource- a new or reserve source of supply or support.
Major Understandings- In science documents, statements which give detail to the scientific content or concepts underlying performance indicators.
