VLS Navigation & Definitions

To explore the New York State learning standards click one of the seven standard area icons (examples below) located at the top of the VLS home page. As you navigate through the learning standards, their associated key ideas, performance indicators, and instructional resources are available.

Accessing Content

Drill Down: All VLS pages contain a menu bar listing seven standard areas. After clicking on one of these menu items, a user can select or ’drill down’ through the content (e.g., select "Explore Standards Explore Resources", then a standard, key idea, performance indicator) and associated material specific to that subject area. The content is organized with relationships on hierarchical levels. This method provides an understanding of the subject area’s learning standards and associated resources from a general level to more specific levels of content.

VLS Search: This function provides direct access to VLS content items (e.g. sample tasks, lesson plans) related to user inputted search text. The feature also allows a user to narrow a search by choosing a subject area and level or grades. An added feature is the ability to "drill-up" through the levels from the search results. Every listing has a view alignments option, which allows the user to see the exact levels where a sample task or lesson plan appears in the navigation system and peruse related content. An Extended Search provides access to SED and GEM (Gateway to Educational Materials) resources.

Definitions

Standard Area- one of the above (subject area or subject area grouping)

Content Standard- narrative description of expected knowledge and abilities that describe what students should know and be able to do (usually in a domain or particular subject area).

Learning Standard- an established level or degree of quantity, value or quality. The NYS Learning Standards are defined as the knowledge, skills, and understandings that individuals can and do habitually demonstrate over time as a consequence of instruction and experience.

Key Idea- major domains (skills, knowledge or ideas) that define fields of study or areas of learning. The NYSED key ideas define their respective learning standards in specific content areas (e.g., dance, music, theatre, visual arts) or fundamental skills (e.g., reading, writing, listening, speaking).

Performance Indicator- a description of student achievement expectations on the developmental levels of elementary (grades K-4), intermediate (grades 5-8) and commencement (grades 9-12). LOTE does not use grade levels related to performance indicators but rather proficiency levels (see below).

Level- a position on any scale of achievement. Specific levels used in the NYSED Learning Standards are: elementary (grades K-4), intermediate (grades 5-8), commencement (grades 9-12) (general education and major sequence in arts); checkpoint A, B and C (in LOTE); and core, specialized and experiential (in CDOS). On State elementary and intermediate tests, four performance levels are identified: (1) serious academic deficiencies; (2) basic proficiency; (3) proficiency; and (4) exceeds the standards.

Checkpoint- a defined level of achievement in the Learning Standards for Languages Other Than English.

Sample Tasks- an example of student work that suggests evidence of appropriate progress towards a standard at a given level.

Assessment- any systematic method of obtaining information from tests and other sources, used to draw inferences about characteristics of people, objects or programs.

Resource- a new or reserve source of supply or support.

Major Understandings- In science documents, statements which give detail to the scientific content or concepts underlying performance indicators.
