Requirement Description

"Graduate Coursework" means studies that can be credited toward a graduate degree granted by an institution of higher education that is approved by the Commissioner of Education or by a regional accrediting agency.

School counseling courses prepare individuals for careers as school counselors. School Counselors in NY used to be called Guidance Counselors.

Acceptable graduate-level courses:

  • should focus on working as a School Counselor in a public school educational setting
  • preferably should be in the subject of School Counseling AND taken at an accredited college with an approved preparation program leading to School Counseling certification in the state in which the college is based
  • can also be completed at the graduate level (with limitations) through accredited colleges that prepare individuals for teaching, administrative/supervisory or pupil personnel services certification or any accredited college

For institutions outside New York State:

  • consult the college catalog or that state's education department for verification
  • NOTE - completion of an out-of-state School Counseling program does NOT constitute acceptance of all coursework taken through that program, regardless of program accreditation or whether a certificate was issued in that state.
